In Response To: Migrating IDS 10.5 on AIX to IDS 12.2 on Linux X86 (Daniel Dansereau)

Daniel:

- I agree, avoid journaled filesystems, especially the ones on Linux.

- Make decisions about page sizes. Your default on AIX was 4K but on

Linux it is 2K so whether you use default pages on the new server or 4K

pages may affect performance and may limit table size growth (re: the 2^24

page count limit).

- Figure out how many objects (tables, indexes, partitions of same)

there will be in each dbspace and use the -ef and -en options to onspaces

(or the equivalent SQL API command options) to size the partition header

page table at the time the dbspace is created to minimize fragmentation of

the tablespace tablespace over time.

- Use FILLFACTOR actively to properly configure newly created indexes to

avoid unnecessary node splitting.

- Take advantage of MAX_FILL_DATA_PAGES to minimize wasted space within

tables that have variable length columns (VARCHAR, LVARCHAR, etc.).

- Research the various migration methods and pick one that makes sense

to you:

- Export/import using

- UNLOAD/LOAD or dbload

- dbexport/dbimport

- myexport/myimport using

- sqlcmd

- HPLoader

- External Tables

- HPLoader

- Direct data copy using SQL tools to the new server

- Enterprise Replication

Only Enterprise Replication will let you easily perform the migration prior
to server cutover and maintain both servers in sync both before and after
cutover (in case you have to fall back to the old server shortly after
cutover). However, setting up ER between a very old version like 10.00 and
v12.10 can be tricky.
