Hi Tim,
Here's a thought. Is your 32bit informix certified to run on that new
server? (they are both sparc) I don't have a link for the support
matrix. You could install Informix 9.30.UC1 on the 64bit server (32bit
software should be fine on 64bit o/s). If that is possible, you now
have informix 9.30.UC1 on both sparc machines (Sun Enterprise 250 & Sun
T5120). You could set up the chunks on new server the same or different
than old server, just have the links in place to support the 9.30 setup
and enough space to take the restore. Run the IDS 9.30 restore to the
new server. Now you are in an inplace upgrade situation. Again, I
don't have a link to any matrix in front of me, can you go directly from
IDS 9.30 to 11.10? My memory is fuzzy, point your environment to the
new binaries and start her up?.... Even if I am wrong, you are playing
on a test server, it might be worth a try....
I could be way off base, so it's good to pursue Art's method as well
(he's likely right on target).....
Enjoy the experiment :-)

Norma Jean Sebastian,
Yes on the upgrade to 64bits we are going to 64bit Informix. We were
9.30.UC1 32 bit and I am going to 11.10.FC2 which is 64bits.

The 64bit server is a brand new server and I am doing all sorts of
testing
on it. The export needs to come from the production 32bit system sooner
or
later but I am trying this on the new server first. At the moment the
utils2_ak Makefile seems to have some sort of odd error/or/dependency in
it.

We do not do upgrades in place so I can usually get a server to test on.
Sun
had a 45% off try and buy program that was too good to be true.

Tim,
as you have seen, Art has given great suggestions.
One thing you didn't mention is if your informix version is going 64
bit. You said informix 9.3 to 11.10, but did not specify 9.3.Uxx
(32bit) versus 11.10.Fxx (64 bit)... The letters indicating 32 versus 64

if memory serves me correctly. You are going from a 32 bit Sun server
to 64, so why not do it with your informix too?
I think you may have some wiggle room short of the dbexport/dbimport,...

The devil is in the details and depends if you have test servers you can

experiment with before go-live.....
I remember doing this several years back on Sun, I don't remember all
the details, but we did not dbexport/dbimport.

Hi Sebastian, I am leaving Sun Enterprise 250 (32 bit Sparc) Solaris 8
informix 9.30, going to Sun T5120 (64 bit Sparc) Solaris 10 Informix
11.10 and more disk drives to spread out the I/O!.

The migration guide suggest dbexport/dbimport but I wonder if there is a

better way.

Thanks for your time...

,,,Tim
