2004 IBM DB2 Information Management Technical Conference - Call For Speakers

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Preparations for the 2004 IBM DB2 Information Management Technical Conference are now underway. Now is the time to submit your proposals for presenting at the conference. The conference will again be held at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, NV. Registration will begin on Sunday afternoon, September 19 and pre-conference classes will he held that morning. The conference sessions begin Monday morning, September 20, and end at noon Friday, September 24. Please begin to promote this event and share this note with others who may be interested in presenting at the conference.

Here are the ground rules for proposal submissions:

  • Presentation sessions will be 75 minutes long. Expect your presentations to be scheduled twice, wherever possible.
  • We strongly favor new or updated presentations.
  • We strongly favor speakers with multiple proposals.
  • If you know of qualified candidates who were not in the conference last year, please circulate this note to them.
  • (Please consider speaking effectiveness in addition to technical qualifications).
  • Don't presume that because you were selected for the conference last year that you will automatically be selected this year - we have a limited number of speaking slots and we need to present a substantial number of new faces every year.
  • Agenda Owners:
    1. DB2 and BI: Ed Thompson (gethomps@us.ibm.com) and Scott Howard (scottho@us.ibm.com)
    2. Informix: Dawn Shannon (shannon@us.ibm.com)
    3. U2: Janet Oswald (oswaldj@us.ibm.com)
  • What we need at this point are your Agenda Designations, Presentation Titles, Speaker Name(s), and brief preliminary abstracts for your proposals. (When we issue the speaking invitations, we will ask for formal titles and abstracts.) Please send these ASAP - the probability of your presentations being accepted will decrease rapidly with time.

Please submit your inquiries and session proposals to Ed Thompson (gethomps@us.ibm.com) and copy the appropriate agenda owner.

And of course all the agenda owners are interested in: What's new and what's going to be hot in September!

Although the conference covers the big picture and current trends and directions, the heart and soul of this conference is the availability of immediately usable, practical, technical detail. That's what we're really looking for. We are also interested in a few really good "Back to the Basics" presentations for attendees that are new to Data Management. There will be a large exposition area for marketing; what we need here is technical meat for the sessions.

Important Dates

February 26, 2004Deadline for conference presentation proposals
March 26, 2004Plan to complete selection and send notifications of proposal acceptance by e-mail
July 23, 2004Presentation softcopy materials must be submitted by this date if selected

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

Customers and Business Partners selected to present will receive complimentary attendance at the conference, including all sessions, social events and breakfast and lunch each day. You will be responsible for your own travel and hotel. If you do not submit your softcopy materials by the due date which will be confirmed to you in the acceptance note, your tuition can not be waived :-(

For IBM Speakers selected, your travel and living expenses will be considered for reimbursement based on the following criteria:

  • You will be eligible for travel reimbursement by the conference based on the number of presentation slots (75 minute time periods) you use during the conference. * 1 slot (1 hotel night) * 2 slots (1 hotel night + travel) * 3 slots (2 nights + travel) * 4 or more slots (5 nights + travel). If you do not submit your softcopy materials by the due date provided to you in the acceptance note, your travel expenses can not be reimbursed :-(
  • You must follow all IBM reasonable and actual travel guidelines, including copies of proper documentation and an itinerary indicating that the AMEX Group airfare was "lowest non-refundable airfare purchased at least 3 weeks prior to your arrival date" and only hotel expenses from conference designated hq hotel will be reimbursed. Airfare exceptions need prior approval to ensure T&L coverage. If you do not follow the guidelines and/or you do not have prior approval on any exceptions, then your travel expenses can not be reimbursed. :-(
  • All abstracts and presentations must be submitted by the due dates. Sessions that are missing from the CD-ROM or lacking hard-copy handouts are overwhelmingly the single largest reason for attendee dissatisfaction. Please note all deadlines before making your commitment to present.
  • If selected for reimbursement, expense reports will be submitted to the conference manager, Gene Bruczkowski

All decisions to cover travel and living expenses rest with the conference committee. Speakers will be notified if their expenses will be covered as soon as the abstracts are selected.
