Call for Speakers for the 2003 IBM Data Management Conference

Submitted to IIUG ENews by IBM on 5 March 2003

Preparations for the 2003 IBM Data Management Technical Conference are now underway. Now is the time for you to submit your proposals for presenting at the conference. The conference will be held at the Las Vegas Hilton in the fine city of Las Vegas, NV. Registration begins on Sunday afternoon, October 26 along with pre conference classes that morning. The conference sessions begin Monday morning, October 27, and end at noon Friday, October 31. Please help us promote this event and share this note with others who may be interested in presenting at the conference.

Here are some ground rules for proposal submission:

  • We strongly favor new or updated presentations.
  • We strongly favor speakers with multiple proposals.
  • If you know of qualified candidates who were not in the conference last year, please circulate this note to them. (Please consider speaking effectiveness in addition to technical qualifications before doing so).
  • Don't presume that because you were selected for the conference last year that you will automatically be selected this year - we have a limited number of speaking slots and we need to present a substantial number of new faces every year.
  • Agenda Owners:
    1. DB2 and BI: Paul Holbrook (paulho@us.ibm.com) and Scott Howard (scottho@us.ibm.com)
    2. Informix: Omkar Nimbalkar (omkarn@us.ibm.com)
    3. U2: Janet Oswald (oswaldj@us.ibm.com)
  • What we need now are Agenda Designation, Titles, Speaker Name(s), and brief preliminary abstracts for your proposals. (When we issue formal speaking invitations, we will ask for formal titles and abstracts.) Please send these ASAP to paulho@us.ibm.com. The probability of your presentations being accepted decreases rapidly as time passes.

Please route all your inquiries and abstracts to Paul Holbrook (paulho@us.ibm.com) with a copy to the appropriate Agenda Owner.

Presentation sessions will be 75 minutes long. Whenever possible, presentations will be given twice. This is a list of possible topics just to stimulate your thoughts:

And as always: what's new and what will be hot in October besides Las Vegas!

Though the conference will certainly cover the big picture and trends and directions, the heart and soul of this conference is unquestionably the immediately usable, practical, technical detail. That's what we're really looking for. We would also be interested in some really good "Back to the Basics" presentations for attendees that are new to Data Management. There will be a large exposition area for marketing; but what we need now is technical meat for the sessions.
