CornerCap's IDS/Linux Success - New Feature

Editor's Note: The following article was Sean R. Durity's contribution at the request of IIUG and is the first of a series of articles submitted by our members to showcase how they are using Informix products. Sean also helps the IIUG as the moderator for the Linux-Informix discussion list and Special Interest Group (SIG).

To submit your own contribution highlighting how you best took advantage of IBM Informix products and services, please e-mail ENews@IIUG.org.

CornerCap Investment Counsel is a small money management firm headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. We are investment advisors for institutions and qualified plans, high net-worth individuals, and three mutual funds. We have about $400 million under management. CornerCap has used Informix products since 1994.

We started with Informix SE and 4GL and built a quarterly client reporting and billing system. We have also added internally-built portfolio manager and trading applications (built with SPL, Java and Cold Fusion). I am the IT Manager, Chief Architect, Programmer and DBA.

Last year we began looking at how to bring our proprietary research system in-house. Our research system, Fundametrics (TM), was originally developed for Solaris using a lightly known language called Vision. Code maintenance and improvements were not possible and many of the original constraints of the application (like the cost of data storage) were no longer as constraining. Fundametrics does weekly calculation and ranking of fundamental financial information for equities. We needed to expand its flexibility and capability.

We also wanted to consolidate the development and OS platforms of our firm. I saw the database as the central hub and most important decision we needed to make. Informix SE would not handle some of the calculation and storage requirements of the new research application and our expected growth of data.

After investigation, we chose what was called the Internet Foundation Bundle (IDS 9.21) - Workgroup Edition for the Linux platform and the TimeSeries DataBlade. Together these provided several key technical benefits for CornerCap: object-relational technology for more flexible and elegant development, handling of Time Series data, Java-in-the-Server and room for growth and new applications.

Our migration from SE was smooth, including the transfer of nearly 300 stored procedures. We saw immediate speed benefits from our new hardware and database. Our new Fundametrics has taken advantage of IDS's OR technology like typed tables, distinct types, collections, and the TimeSeries DataBlade.

ServerStudio (Java and Windows) has been a tremendous boost to our development efforts. Currently, we are working on using more OR technology and moving our Java into the server. We will also be upgrading to 9.30 in the near future. Informix technology has been a good decision and a boost to the heart of our infrastructure and development.
