In Response To: RE: Informix 10 crash (Paul Watson)

Hi all,

First thank you for your hints on our problem.
For anybody who is interested in why our database crashed, I want to
give a short summary of what really happened (as far as we know by now).

First of all, it was not a real Informix problem but a Client setup
problem.
The point was that we run two instances of our application server on the
same machine, accessing the same Database instance.
Our application server is Jboss and DB Access is done vie JDBC, latest
version, using XA Transactions with a connection pool. This is standard
(at least for Jboss). It is also not forbidden to run twon instances on
the same machine, as long as the TCP Ports are unique per instance.
The specific problem was found inside the transcation manager of Jboss,
which implements the Xid generation (which is the transaction identifier
for an XA transaction). This identifier is build by using the hostname
and a counter, which always starts at zero.
It occurred that both instances have a transaction with the same Xid at
nearly the same time, especially when both instances are started at the
same time.
Now if one instance does a commit and the other a rollback, Informix
tried to rollback a transaction, which was not existing any more
(because the other Jboss instance had already commited the transaction.
This lead to the crash.
The solution is simple: Jboss supports setting the base for the Xid
identifier in its jboss-service.xml file, where the XidFactory is
instanciated. For the second instance we have set a value very different
from the first instance and now the problem cannot occur any more. Since
this setting has been done, IDS has not crashed any more.

Just to mention: we have switched to another machine, patched Solaris
multiple times, modified system parameters, modified IDS parameters,
upgraded to IDS 10.0FC6W5. Of course, none of these could help us to get
rid of the problem.

Maybe this helps somebody in the future.

Marcus

If you are running fully patched Solaris then you should be fine
(subject to a bug unique to hardware combinations) We have a number of
customers on FC6 and Solaris 9

Cheers
