John,

From what you describe, I have to wonder if possibly you are having a
concurrence issue. You appear to be describing a situation where more
people are waiting then are working. They could be waiting for
resources like CPU or I/O; they could also be waiting for rows of data
that are locked by another user of the system. They could also be
waiting for a checkpoint to complete. Checkpoint issues would be less if
you are using FUZZYCHECKPOINTS, are you?

The simple onstat commands, run during the problem times, would give you
more info on what the users are waiting for.

If you are not new to Informix, then you can ignore this entire message.

If you are new to Informix you will need to get the Manuals out and read
the sections on the onstat command, you find them very useful.

Hi All -
We are trying to tune an HP-UX 11i/IDS 9.4 HP 9000 system (risc box).
It has 2 CPUs at 1 Gigz each, 4 Gig of Memory, 64 bit OS and lots of
disk space in a striped and mirrored configuration.
We have an oltp environment that gets so bogged down that the screen
freezes for 10 minutes (even when it's the only application running).
With a few users performance is great but with 25 users and half of them

are doing data entry - it's not fine. Obviously - this is unacceptable.
When we run the os monitoring tool, it will initially report a CPU
bottleneck and then an I/O bottleneck. Those bottlenecks clear and the
users still are hung 7 minutes later.
Are there any parameters you would recommend we pay special attention
to? Any particular settings you have them set to? What are the
consequences of setting the cpuvps higher than the number of cpus on the

system?
Could Informix be tying up resources and not releasing them? Where do
we look to find out? What parameters would cause this affect?
Any ideas are welcome. We can't seem to find the right combination.
