Hi,

If you use IP to connect to your db, no changes of your clients should be
necessary. The only need to have client-side 64 bit code is in case you use
(and need to have) shared memory access. Otherwise, setting INFORMIXSERVER
to a TCP-Connection should do the trick and all your apps still work. It
should also be possible to install a clientsdk 32bit and server 64 bit on
the same machine (maybe in two different informix dirs).

Regarding unload/load, it should not be necessary (my personal opinion). We
have upgraded some databases in the past (I think it was 9.30) from 32 bit
to 64 bit. It was always in place, no problems encountered.
The only thing is when you upgrade from 9.40 from a lower version (e.g.
9.21), you will need plenty of space depending on your database size (we had
very many tables > 200000), because the internal structures are converted to
a different scheme during update. But this was not depending on the 32/64
issue. Read the upgrade notes for this and check back with your reseller.

Marcus

I remember a few issues.

We're on sun/solaris and our default compiler compiles to 32-bit. So, we had
to modify the c4gl command to compile using the flag for 64-bit.

We have plenty of C and ESQL/C code. The 64-bit compiler on Solaris now sees
a long as a 64-bit, whereas it used to consider a long 32-bit with the
32-bit compiler. int types are still 32-bit.

So, we had to evaluate our use of "long" data types in our C code and ended
up changing many of them to int.

We still haven't upgraded our 4J's code to 64 bit. Our C functions behave
very mysteriously. It's probably the gcc compiler that 4Js requires. We just
haven't had the time to spend to go back and figure out the problem and
covert the application.
