I am assuming you used ontape -r to recover your instance.

When you restored you database did you try to run oninit? When
a restore finishes, it leaves the engine in quiescent mode. You can use
onstat -p as a quick way to verify quiescent status. If your engine is
down (shared memory not initialized), use Marcus' instructions for
clearing any stuck segments, you may want to run onmode -yuk first,
though. If it were me, I'd start a second terminal session and run this
command in it:

tail -f /usr/informix/online.log

That will show what goes in your log as it happens. Then in
another terminal window execute oninit -v, to start in verbose mode.
This will tell you, if the engine fails to start, at exactly what point
failure occurs. If onstat says you have a quiescent engine, use onmode
-m (multiuser) to bring the engine online, oninit will only clash with
the already running processes. If you have a contract, calling support
is almost never a bad idea.
