There were some known problems on XP with IDS versions before 9.40, in including not creating the dbspaces, for example:
161355 SERVER INSTALL ON A FRESH XP MACHINE REPORTS THAT THE SERVER WAS NOT INITIALIZED SUCCESSFULLY

In the first few versions of 9.40 there was also similar problems when installing via Remote Desktop/Terminal Server but these were all resolved by around TC3.

4.3.2.2 Creating the DbSpace

Thus the database engine is running, as the automatic installation process
failed, there is no other DbSpace than the rootdbs. If you go to
"C:\IFMXDATA\ol_popeye", you will see that the files are there but nothing
is initialized.

We can use the Informix "onspaces" command to create what we need.

4.3.2.3 Running "onspaces"

The "onspaces" command will help us create the missing DbSpace.

To run "onspaces", we are going to run a special "Command Prompt", the one
created by the Informix installation program.

Click on the "Start" button, go to "All Programs", "Informix Dynamic Server
9.30" and click on "ol_popeye", as shown in Figure 54.

Quick explanation:
.. "-c" is used for creating,
.. "-d" followed by "dbs_popeye" specifies the name of the DbSpace,
.. "-p" sets the path, note that the path and file already exist,
.. "-o" sets the offset at the beginning of the file this is mostly
used when using raw devices,
.. "-s" defines the size of the DbSpaces, as we decided for 50 Mb
earlier, here the DbSpace size is defined as 50 000 Kb.

If you recall well, we also wanted to create a Smart BLOB Space. This one as
well was not completed successfully.
