But since we are migrating in the same machine then there is no need to import the raw devices, isn't it?

I mean:
- Deatach the raw devices
- Upgrade PA-RISC to ITANIUM (Including IDS 9.4FC4)
- Attach raw devices
- Start the engine

Would do the migration?

Other question:

Since we have 9.4FC4 I think there is no problem moving to 9.4FC[6|7], but if we plan to go with IDS10 would the procedure be the same?

Hi,

a HP-UX PA-Risc to Itanium migration is a 'homogenous' migration!
You don't need to export/import your databases. In a SAN environment
you have three options:
- make the database raw devices visible on the new Itanium machine
(vgimport, hopefully no name conflicts, symbolic links for raw devices)
Afterwards just stop the database on PA-Risc and start on Itanium
- If you want to use new diskspace:
Same as above, but copy the raw devices with dd to the new lvols
- OR (without SAN reconfiguration) copy the data over the LAN (remote
shell commands, depending on LAN speed with intermediate gzip/gunzip)

Versions: I would suggest the newest version - should be FC6 or FC7 .
There have been performance issues with older versions.

If don't have experience with migrating 4GL/applications etc.
PA-Risc codes/programs are supposed to run on Itanium hardware
but I'm not sure if it is a good idea if you have complex
applications (or performance demanding ones).
E.g. the IDS (PA-Risc) himself doesn't run on Itanium correctly :-)
