Re: running different version of IDS 9.x

Wolfgang,

You can run multiple versions on the same machine; it takes a little bit of
planning and care. The short answer for your immediate problem is to set
your LD_LIBRARY_PATH or SHLIB_PATH (one is for Sun; the other, HP, and I
can never remember which one is which) to include the directory in which
those libraries are contained. Obviously, this will have to be set
differently for each version, so your environment settings will have to
change. Also, don't do what I did, which is to simply append your entry on
to the end of the path; that doesn't actually re-set it. You'll have to
replace the entry in the SHLIB_PATH in order for that to work.

There are also considerations for the development products as well; I did a
presentation last year on directory structure standards at the IIUG
conference (one I hope to repeat this year) which addresses the question of
hosting multiple versions of the development products, server products,
etc. on the same machine. There are some "gotchas" in doing that, and we
continue to find them in our environment.

My recommendation would be to install each product in a separate directory
under /opt/informix (i.e. /opt/informix/IDS9.3.FC3,
/opt/informix/4GLX.X.XX, and so forth), and then use the SHLIB_PATH and
INFORMIXDIR to control what you're looking at when you do things. Just a
note; there is a little more work to code compilation if you go with this
method. You have to set INFORMIXDIR to the directory in which you've
installed the tool that you want to compile under, but once you've
compiled, you have to set INFORMIXDIR back to the engine directory in order
to connect to the database. It's a little kludgey, but in our case, it
beat the problem of having to install a separate INFORMIXDIR with full
engine for each combination of engine and tool (we had 2 engine versions,
and about 6 tool versions on the same machine, which would have required
about 6 installations of the combinations -- some were not used by the
applications running on the machine). If you choose to install the tools
in the same directory as the engine, you'll not have the compilation
problem, but I don't know how you'd manage multiple versions of the tool
for the same engine version without re-installing the engine in a different
directory.

If you have further questions, please let me know; I'd like to see more
discussion on the topic of directory structures. Our competitors have us
beat badly on installation instructions (although to be fair, they need
more of them than we do, in general) and standard directory structures, and
we could do better as a community to resolve that.

Hi!

We are running some onlines of the version IDS9.21FC6 on HP Tru64 V5.0a
Alpha Clusters.
Now we are planning to upgrade to version 9.30FC3.
We are also using the products 4GLRT, SQL, ESQL/C.

We plane to install the new version IDS9.30 parallel to the version 9.21,
and first migrate only one online to 9.30.

I've checked, that the shared libraries of the two versions are different.
When i installed the products, the links in the /usr/lib directories were
replaced.

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 31 Feb 6 12:28 iosm09a.so ->
/usr/informix9.3/lib/iosm09a.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 29 Mar 1 2002 iosm09a.so.021119 ->
/usr/informix9/lib/iosm09a.so

Is it possible to run different versions of IDS9.x on the same
cluster/machine?
There was no problem between the versiond 7.31 and 9.21 ( becaue the names
of the libraries were different ).

Thanks for information!

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best Regards
