Hi Arvind,

As with many software questions, the answer is "it depends". It sounds
like you don't have much understanding of the IDS architecture or design,
so your first step needs to be to read the IDS Administrator's Guide. If
you don't have a copy, you can download it from
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/library/. You didn't
say what release you're using, so pick the manuals for whichever release
you're using. The manuals are critical. Without understanding the
architecture you'll have a hard time understanding the configuration.

What you will find is that the number of processes is determined by
parameters in the $INFORMIXDIR/etc/onconfig file (the exact filename
depends on the value of the $ONCONFIG environment variable.) NUMCPUVPS
and NUMAIOVPS are the primary parameters that determine the number of
processors, but NETTYPE may also contribute.

The CPU VP's (Virtual Processors) are designed to be CPU-bound. That is,
they will consume large amounts of CPU time, almost all of it USER time.
Most of the SYSTEM time will be by the NET and AIO VPs. Exactly how much
user cpu time is consumed depends on the SQL statements of the
application. There's not a lot you can do to reduce this other than
having fewer CPU VPs. But if you do that, the DBMS may not process SQL
statements as quickly. You may have to experiment some.

oninit Prcess in Linux Environment, [4211]






Hi all,

We are facing a strange problem with oninit process on Linux Environment,
we are seeing around 20 - 40 oninit processes, initiated by root (linux
SU) and also Informix user (informix).

Is there any specific reasons why so many oninit processes are getting
invoked.

If there is a process to reduce the oninit proceses on the Linux server,
kindly let us know.
