many threads for process ?

We are running a batch process, and when monitoring it, I see a huge amount of threads associated with it, and most of them are waiting. One of the tables in the query is fragmented, but it only has 10 fragments, so I wouldn't expect to see more than 10 scan threads.
Any ideas ?
