Hi James,

1 Yes to the SE and IDS workgroup, but you might need to install
utf-8 locale's for Chinese. (available via ILS)
you should set DB_LOCALE to en_us.utf8 or zh_tw.utf8. (I don't
think it matters which)

2 I have no expertise with international aspects of 4Js, but you
might try connecting with DB_LOCALE=en_us.utf8 and
CLIENT_LOCALE=zh_tw.big5 and inserting some big5 data.
When working with windows and Chinese data, you may need to set
the user and/or the system locale so that the Chinese data displays and is
processed correctly.

3 if you are having problems with IBM Informix messages being
returned in localized text, you could also try setting DB_LANG=en_us/04e3
or en_us/0333 (This overrides CLIENT_LOCALE for message retrieval)

4 A second test for point 2, set DB_LOCALE=en_us.invalid, and start
a 4J's client, should result in an error, equilivant to one of these
Informix errors -23101,--23104 or -23109, it uses GLS locales.

GLS Implementation with Chinese: [4129]










We have a customer that wants to be able to store a few of their text data
fields (like a part description) in Traditional Chinese.

The application will use Four J's BDL (or Genero) windows client, and the
Informix SE database (IDS-Workgroup could be substituted if necessary).

They want the application to run in English. Only 2 or 3 fields will be
Chinese.

This will be the Windows Client with Four J's. I know how to key in the
Chinese characters into the Four J's Windows client, but not how to get it
to process them .

What I need to know is:

- can I implement GLS and key English into most of the fields and Chinese
into just a few?

- How do I enable Four J's BDL, and the Informix database to accept and
store the Chinese characters?
(Is this just a matter of setting the 'LOCALE' variables?)
