In Response To: installing sqlcmd (John Adamski (Work Account))

Hi John,

Thanks for letting me know about this and I'm sorry for the trouble that's
been caused.

It's curious I've not seen that error (about the scope of #pragma). GCC
6.3.0 on a Mac doesn't give it; neither does GCC 5.2.0, nor 4.9.1, nor
4.8.1 (which is as far back as I've still got builds). Oh well!

Do you have a script gccpragmata in the SQLCMD download?

$ gccpragmata -h
Usage: gccpragmata [-clnpu][-hV] [file ...]
-c Convert #pragma GCC to a comment
-h Print this help message and exit
-l List files containing #pragma GCC
-n Print line numbers
-p Print GCC pragmata lines only (default)
-u Convert comments containing #pragma GCC to active code
-V Print version information and exit
$

In case you haven't got it, I attached it. You'd need to do something like:

gccpragmata -c esnprintf.c > x
mv esnprintf.c esnprintf.c.original
mv x esnprintf.c

This converts the pragmata to comments. I don't know why I haven't
implemented a -d option to delete the pragmata. An in-place editing option
might be useful too, but isn't simple to do generically across all variants
of Unix with standard tools. (I have a shell script that achieves in-place
editing, but I didn't want to overburden everyone with all the code I have).

I've since removed the pragmata from the source code (so esnprintf.c 1.9
doesn't have them any more; you must have 1.8 since that's when the
pragmata were added). I simply decide that those warnings
(-Wformat-nonliteral) are not sufficiently useful and ignore them via a
command-line option when I'm doing my most stringent testing. You can
apply the same technique to any other file that gives you the same grief
that would be just stderr.c, I think. Only getopt.h has pragmata
otherwise, and they're for -Wredundant-decls and aren't in function scope
(altogether less likely to cause grief).

Let me know if you have other problems with the build.
