Re: Not enough room in ROOT DBspace

Date: Wednesday, 4 January 2017, at 4:45 p.m.

In Response To: Re: Not enough room in ROOT DBspace (STEVEN AB)

Original post:

ROOTPATH is $INFORMIXDIR/storage/chunks/ts_rootdbs

/storage/chunks is just a storage where the dbs are located and softlinks are made in $INFORMIXDIR/storage/chunks.

But all the files are located in /storage/chunks

On the server you are trying to duplicate, it's likely that the physical log and/or the logical logs are not in the rootdbs. You can verify this by looking at onstat -l and onstat -d output.

In onstat -l output it would look like this:

onstat -l

IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 12.10.FC8 -- On-Line -- Up 00:15:07 -- 248084 Kbytes

Physical Logging
Buffer bufused bufsize numpages numwrits pages/io
P-2 0 64 125 4 31.25

phybegin physize phypos phyused %used

1:263 25000 11920 12 0.05
... <stuff removed>

address number flags uniqid begin size used %used
44d8af88 1 U-B---- 1 1:25263 5000 5000 100.00
44b68f68 2 U-B---- 2 1:30263 5000 5000 100.00
44c3ef40 3 U-B---- 3 1:35263 5000 5000 100.00
44c3efa8 4 U-B---- 4 1:40263 5000 5000 100.00

In the above output for the physical log you would look at the information located below the "phybegin" label. In the above output it is 1:263. So that means my physical log is in chunk 1 starting at page offset 263 into that chunk.

For the logical logs, I list 4 above, you look at the data below the "begin" column. In all 4 logs, the begin info is 1:<something>. So again the 1 means chunk 1 of the system and then they all have different offsets into that chunk.

So in my case, my physical and logical logs are both in chunk 1. Chunk 1 is the 1st chunk of the rootdbs. That is the only place when you initialize an instance for the 1st time (so you are doing full disk initialization) that they can be located. So since you have 3gb's worth of logical and physical log file in the $ONCONFIG file you are copying, but your ROOTSIZE is only 2 gb. That's why the server won't initialize. So for the server you are trying to copy, it must have been set up in 3 steps. First initialize the server with the -i flag...then add more space to the server with onspaces commands to add chunks and or other dbspaces, then use onparam's to add/move your logical logs, and also likely use onparams to increase the size/move your physical log.

If that was done, then you can't just copy the $ONCONFIG file from the 1 server....because there is nothing in the $ONCONFIG file that tells the location of the physical and logical log. So when a server goes through disk initialization for the 1st time, the physical and logical logs are located in the 1st and currently only chunk of the rootdbs. After that they can be moved and increased in size (which change the $ONCONFIG values) which would then make using those setting in another server's $ONCONFIG file and trying to do an oninit -iy impossible to achive because the size of those entities is too big for the size configured for ROOTSIZE.
