In Response To: Re: Migration from AIX to Linux (ONDREJ MIKA)

There are several other options besides dbexport to text and reload:

1 - If you have no BLOB, CLOB, TEXT, or BYTE columns you can use my
binary export/import tool ul.ec which is in the utils2_ak package in the
IIUG Software Repository. It's default binary format is portable between
architectures and the binary files also tend to be a bit smaller than text
export files unless you have lots of varchar and lvarchar type columns that
are mostly empty or char type columns with lots of trailing spaces.

2 - You can copy the data directly from one server to the other using
tools like my dbcopy and dbmove utilities (also in utils2_ak).

3 -Use the HPLoader to copy data out through pipes to HPLoader
instances on the new server reloading it directly without disk in between.

4 - Use External tables linked to pipes to do the same thing as in #3
but simpler to implement and manage.

5 - Use Enterprise Replication to replicate the data to the new
server. This has the advantage that it can maintain both servers in sync
both before and after the cut over to the new system. That way in case
there are performance or other unexpected problems after cut over you can
always cut back to the original server(s) until the problem on the new
server(s) can be resolved. Then, once everything has been on line on the
new server(s) for a month or so and all is well, you can stop ER and shut
down the older servers for good.

In addition, besides using dbexport/dbimport for export/import using text
files, you can use my dbexport/dbimport replacement utility package,
myexport (also in the IIUG Repository and it requires utils2_ak at a
minimum) which can use external tables and export/import many or all tables
in parallel to speed up the process. It's a least 2x as fast as
dbexport/dbimport. It also has some nice features like automatic remapping
of dbspace assignments in "IN <dbspace>" clauses.
