RE: Informix tool related question

Rob,
if your database is IDS 9.40, you can dynamically turn on sqlexplain
with onmode -Y, followed by a onstat -g stm <sessid>. I have not done
it, i'm not on 9.4 yet, but i hear that's a feature. by doing that, you
wouldn't need the source code recompiled to run with "set explain on".
a major thing i am looking forward to as my DB is running under SAP.

also check out www.agsltd.com (probably mentioned on the iiug website
too).
one of the add-on modules says:
SQL Capture : You can define SQL Capture processes to retrieve SQL
statements executed by user sessions. Collected data includes SQL
statement itself, user session information and statement's execution
statistics, such as estimated cost, number of temporary tables involved,
etc. You can set flexible custom filters to fine tune which SQL
statements should be captured. All captured SQL in stored in historical
database for a future analysis using provided SQL Viewer tool. You can
also monitor captured SQL statements in real-time.

i don't use it, i saw my first demo today at the Chicago Area Informix
User Group meeting. I guess it's free for X days, but then add-on's
like this one cost money. I plan to check into it.....

Subject: Informix tool related question [3118]

Good afternoon gentleman. I am a software developer for the govt in new
york city and I wanted to ask a question concerning all of your informix
expertise.

I am trying to analyze an online web application which runs on informix,
where unfortunately the source code and latest documentation is not
available. Based on transactions that I can manipulate through the
application GUI, I am trying to figure out how that specific transaction
affects the underlying database. In other words what tables are
populated, affected by the specific transaction. So would any one know
if there is a tool that can tell me throught the informix version that
this application runs, what exactly happened in the database, what has
changed in the database, after the specific transaction has went
through.

Manually this could be quite tedious with just doing the before snapshot
of the table data vs. the after data check.

I would really appreciate any feedback I could get.

Thanks
Rob
