Hello Jon.
Here we had a downgrade process, from sun-solaris to intel based
(virtualized or not, doesn´t matter, to linux_64 redhat based).
4gl applications runs just faster as before, our primary system is on
11.50.FC8W3 on a dual xenon quad-core cpu, with much lower costs,
supporting 1200 simultaneous users (4gl and external applications), and
around 200.000 transactions per day, with an average of 85,43% cpu idle
times.

I don´t see any issue on 4gl recompiling to ubuntu, or redhat, or
centos, really.
I should only recommend you to upgrade to the latest version (there are
several great features, like SOA, and direct file strems manipulation,
dynamic arrays, etc) on 64 bits (compiler and client).

Your informix engine should be at least upgraded to 11.50.xC9 (if unable
to go to 11.70 - great improvements, also)

Please tell us if you have any technical doubt, ok?
(What´s your current 4gl version? You didn´t said...)
