Hi,

the "problem" with the level "Full" vs. "9" is described in PTS-B 133990,
please see below.

[ The reason is that the bootstrap backup (backup of ISM/Legato internal
information) level is not controlled by the onbar backup level. The
bootstrap
backup level is "default", which is "Full" for the very first backup and
"9"
for all the following backups. ]

If you're not backing up the ISM/Legato internal information ( located in
the
directory /nsr , which usually is a link to $INFORMIXDIR/ism ) by some
other
means, then I recommend following the workaround description in
PTS-B 133990.

As for the meaning of the columns "file" and "record" - I don't know.
You should be able to get this information from Legato Networker
documentation. E.g. try http://www.legato.com/resources/manuals/ .

Short Description:

ISM_CATALOG -RECOVER ASKS AND NEEDS THE FIRST VOLUME CREATED EVEN
IF BOOTSTRAP IS SAVED TO A LATER VOLUME.

Long Description :

ism_catalog -recover will ask for the very first volume created
even if the bootstrap is saved to a later volume. so if the first
volume is gone the bootstrap can not be restored using
ism_catalog -recover. on Unix the blunt axe
ism_catalog -recreate_from device will work, but takes a long
time to complete on nt b 133876 will prevent that so there is
no way to restore. This is not documented in the manual
so we might look at a doc bug here however it is very nasty when
one finds out to late that a restore is impossible because the
very first volume is gone.

PTS-B 133990 describes the following problem with the Informix Storage
Manager (ISM) Version 2.20.UC1x :

The command "ism_catalog -create_bootstrap ..." utilizes the
"savegrp" command with the default backup/archive level.
This level automatically evaluates to "full" upon first command
execution, but thereafter evaluates to an incremental level upon all
successive command executions.
Therefore the media/volume containing the first bootstrap creation
is always necessary in order to restore the bootstrap successfully.

Workaround :

To avoid the need for the first media/volume during bootstrap restore,
a bootstrap backup/archive of level "full" needs to be done every
time. To accomplish this, the level must be specified explicitely.
This is not possible with the "ism_catalog -create_bootstrap ..."
command.

Instead, the underlying command "savegrp" must be executed directly.
Replace the command "ism_catalog -create_bootstrap ..." with the
following :

$INFORMIXDIR/bin/savegrp -O -l full ISMData

where
"-O" is a capital-o (not a zero),

"ISMData" is the pool name where the bootstrap data should go,

the command must be executed as user "root".

E.g. in $INFORMIXDIR/bin/onbar (shell script), this replacement
should be done by the Informix Server System Administrator.
Also the output (both stdout and stderr) of the "savegrp" command
should be redirected to the ON-Bar activity log file (BAR_ACT_LOG
parameter from onconfig file).

After my 9.30.UC3 IBM Informix on Linux completes backing up
using ISM and OnBar I receive a bootstrap printout.

What is the purpose of the "Level" column?
Why was the first "Level 0" backup given "Full" and the
second "Level 0" give a "9" ?

Also what does the "file" and "record" columns represent?
I have RTFM's but nothing there.
